Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about navigating the tricky Schengen 90/180-day rule, visa limits, and how our smart calculator simplifies your travel.

How do I easily calculate my 90/180 Schengen days?
Calculating the Schengen rolling window manually with a spreadsheet is notoriously error-prone. The best way is to use a visual Schengen calculator app. It automatically maps your past and future trips on a timeline, instantly highlights your overlapping windows, and clearly shows exactly how many days you have left at any moment before you risk overstaying. How does the Schengen 90/180-day rule actually work?
The rule applies to non-EU/EEA nationals traveling without a long-stay visa or residence permit. It dictates that you can stay in the Schengen Zone for a maximum of 90 days within any given 180-day period. Crucially, this 180-day window is a “rolling” window. It constantly moves on any single day you are in the zone, authorities look backward exactly 180 days to count your total days spent. For more information check out the Schengen 90/180-day rule page.
Does leaving the Schengen Area reset my 90 days?
No! This is the most common misconception. Leaving the Schengen area does not reset your counter to zero. Because it is a rolling window, your older trips only begin to 'fall off' the back of your 180-day history as time marches forward. You only slowly regain days; there is no immediate reset.
How does Schengen Nomad handle complex Bilateral Agreements?
If you are a citizen of certain countries (like the US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.), you might be eligible for Bilateral Visa Waiver Agreements that allow you to stay in specific European countries (like France or Denmark) even after your standard 90 Schengen days are exhausted. Most calculators ignore this. Schengen Nomad actually allows you to flag specific trips as falling under a bilateral agreement, intelligently removing those days from your overall 90-day Schengen count.
Do entry and exit days count as full days?
Yes. According to official short-stay rules, the exact day you enter the Schengen Area and the exact day you exit both count as full days, regardless of the time your flight lands or departs. Even a quick same-day transit entering and leaving counts as a full day against your 90-day allowance. Note that exiting a Schengen country to enter another on the same day still only counts as one day.
What are the penalties if I overstay my 90 days?
Overstaying your Schengen visa or visa-free allowance is taken seriously. Penalties vary by country but can include: Immediate fines (often starting around €500 depending on the country border you exit), deportation, and a stamp in your passport that bans you from re-entering the Schengen Area for 1 to 5 years. Overstays are recorded in the central Entry/Exit System (EES).
Are the UK, Ireland, and Cyprus part of the Schengen area?
No. The United Kingdom left the EU and is categorically not in Schengen. Ireland is an EU member but opted out of Schengen. Cyprus is an EU member currently the process of joining Schengen, but currently does not count. Time spent in these countries does not consume your 90-day Schengen allowance.
Is my travel data stored securely on this app?
By default, trips and calculations stay in your browser (localStorage) on your device. If you sign in with Google and use Subscriber cloud sync, encrypted-at-rest copies of your trips are stored in our database (hosted on Neon PostgreSQL) so you can restore them on another device. We do not sell your travel history. Paddle processes payments separately; see our legal page for details.
How do I save my data?
Your trips are automatically saved in your browser's local storage, no account required. This data is tied to your browser: clearing site data, switching browsers, or using a new device will start you with a blank slate unless you use Subscriber cloud sync after signing in. To keep a permanent backup, use the Export button below the trip list to download a .json file. You can later restore it with the Import button on any device. We recommend exporting after every trip update so you always have a copy. Go to your trips to export now.
